When Preus was in kindergarten, her writing ambitions were launched. You can probably guess which part I wanted.

For now, though, Preus has put folktales aside to work on her next book, a companion to Heart of a Samurai. Preus' backyard writing house, where she crafts her stories and wears fingerless gloves as needed. I love it! But her years spent focusing on laughter have served her well, as evidenced by the bouts of humor that buoy West of the Moon and in the way she approaches her stories.

I just took all these ideas everybody had, all these little scripts and pieces and improv bits, and made them into a show. I feel like writing a novel is a lot like that, with all the different themes that have to come together to make a whole story.

The next book is called Shadow on the Mountain and is. Historical fiction! It is inspired by true life stories of people who were involved in the Resistance in Norway when it was occupied by Nazi Germany, My young hero starts out by delivering underground newspapers, becomes a courier, which requires him to transport coded messages and small weapons by bicycle or on skis, eventually becomes a spy and, when he is at last discovered, has to make his escape over the mountains, on skis, traveling only at night.

All of this with the Gestapo on his heels! Many of his adventures are the real life adventures of Erling Storrusten, a man I interviewed in Norway last year. Shadow on the Mountain should be out this fall from Amulet Books! Allison July 7, at pm. Excellent interview. Thanks, Allison and Margi, for the great information. Allison February 27, at am.
