Detonator now stands in this location. A powered figure-8 style roller coaster, the attraction was set inside and in the dark, featuring spaceship inspired theming.
Guests would board log shaped boats and take a whirling and whooshing journey along a turbulent river before plunging multiple drops including a 20ft drop into darkness inside a tunnel and a 50ft double-down style drop into the final soaking splash. The ride took its final plunge at the end of the season after 26 years of splashtastic fun and remains a favourite today for nostalgic Thorpe Park fans.
When it opened in the early 90s, Calgary Stampede was one of the most intense and thrilling attractions at Thorpe Park Resort. The attraction operated for ten years before leaving the park at the end of the season to make way for Samurai, a Topscan style attraction that remains a thrillseeker favourite at the park today.
Giving a Thorpe Park twist to the classic carousel ride, this family favourite was well-themed and included all eight of the Thorpe Park Ranger characters wearing their iconic yellow and blue uniforms as well as miniature ride vehicles based on other Thorpe Park rides such as the Flying Fish, Loggers Leap, Thunder River and Wicked Witches Haunt. For the season, the attraction reopened as part of Ranger County with a brand new theme.
The classic vintage cars were reworked to resemble safari-style jeeps and the track took guests on a fun adventure into dense jungle with Miss Hippo. The ride operated for thirteen years before closing in the season.
This remained in place until the end of the season where the coaster closed for its extensive re-theme to become The Walking Dead: The Ride. The attraction took riders on a turbulent and soaking voyage down a rapid river through many drenching elements such as waterfalls and tunnels.
It is currently home to six large rollercoasters and a collection of thrill rides. The park began life as an educational tourist attraction when Ready Mix Concrete RMC , owner of the gravel pit on the site at the time, decided to flood the pit to create a series of artificial lakes toward the end of the Seventies.
This opened in July as Thorpe Park, where guests could experience attractions such as the World War 1 airfield, Model World and the Invaders of Britain exhibition.
Since it opened, the park has undergone a transformation into a major theme park through a series of notable events. This was a major turning point for the park, with Tussauds investing heavily in new rides over the next few years.
This spread to nearby buildings and the Wicked Witches Haunt dark ride which was completely destroyed. The area affected by the fire was subsequently redeveloped, with Nemesis Inferno , a large inverted rollercoaster similar to the original Nemesis at Alton Towers also owned by Tussauds built on the site and opened for the season.
The growing legion of Thorpe Park fans only had to wait another three years for the next major rollercoaster, Stealth , a ft tall accelerator coaster, which was added in Merlin Entertainments bought the Tussauds Group in and have continued to invest in the park. The original was quickly brought in following the fire, but was replaced a few years later by the old Cyclone from Drayton Manor when they decided to remove the ride to make way for Drunken Barrels.
On selected nights, Thorpe Park opens after hours for Ministry of Sound club night events. Fright Nights features a number of horror mazes, together with actors roaming the park. Guests can stay overnight in the Thorpe Shark hotel, a temporary-ish structure which sits on land beside the Dome and entrance footbridge.
Thorpe Park originally planned to open a permanent hotel, spa and conference centre, although these plans are on hold after Thorpe Shark hotel opened in with a plan for it to remain open for at least ten years. A sit-down looper, Colossus at one time held the world record for the most inversions on a rollercoaster - sadly now a bit rough and past its prime.
