Each member represented a distinct aesthetic and experience that both challenged shallow societal representations of blackness and strengthened their collective force. There was Tyler and his baritone growl, the visionary who saw the world through tie-dye pastels and brash, shapeshifting music that rejected couth in its raw expression.
Later, there was the lyrical virtuoso Earl Sweatshirt, with his propensity for melding syllables into stream-of-thought confessionals. Back then, artists like Kid Cudi and Drake were also actively laying the groundwork for what popular rap would ultimately become. There was something fundamentally off about the Odd Future way of making music, how for so many it was repulsive and magnetic all at once. A trail of thinkpieces and hand-wringing followed their irreverent destruction of respectability and conventionalism.
For all of their prescience and ambition, the mentality that allowed Tyler and his cohorts their unruly creativity was also ill-informed from the start.
An icky sense of elitism and essentialism showed up time and time again when Tyler explained his motivations. Their personal business is their own. Hip-hop may have initially set out to reject the status quo, but the rise of commercialism inevitably gave way to conformity. Though they are often labeled as horrorcore, the group has universally dismissed it on Twitter, in interviews, and on tracks such as "Sandwitches".
Pitchfork Media has labeled the group as indie rap. On September 8, , it was announced that Odd Future would be making a television show called Loiter Squad.
The show was announced to be a sketch comedy show featuring various skits and pranks and originally aired on March 25, on Adult Swim. The program is produced by Dickhouse Productions, which also is the production company for Jackass. The album is simply named 12 Odd Future Songs , despite having 13 tracks, including a brand new release by The Internet. On May 2, , the group confirmed that they are still together on their Twitter.
The group were not on the original bill, but were substituting for Kendrick Lamar after the concert had been sold out. As of , Tyler, The Creator has been banned from the United Kingdom for 3—5 years due to the allegedly homophobic and violent content of his lyrics from earlier albums such as Bastard and Goblin.
